And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.

But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Dieu est appelé une source de vie dans Psaumes 36.10 ; Jérémie 2.13 ; 17.13. Ici, la même image est appliquée à qui vit en communion avec Dieu. Les paroles du juste ont une vertu salutaire pour lui (14.27) et pour les autres (13.14).
La bouche des méchants. Voir déjà verset 6. Les paroles du méchant ne servent qu'à dissimuler ses pensées, à faire durer plus longtemps ses violences et par conséquent à rendre plus certain le jugement divin.
