Tel le juste qui cède, qui a une défaillance, qui fait un faux pas. Si un homme de bien, cédant à une fausse honte, à la crainte de l'opinion, ou à telle considération blâmable, se laisse aller à commettre une faute, il devient pour les autres justes une occasion de scandale et fournit aux méchants un sujet de triomphe et de coupable joie. Son caractère en subit, une grave atteinte ; il a perdu sa limpidité ; et il n'est plus qu'une source corrompue à laquelle on craindra de venir se désaltérer.
