Ce verset renferme la suite de la déclaration précédente de l'homme sincère qui n'a pu trouver Dieu aussi pleinement qu'il l'aurait désiré. L'homme est limité dans ses investigations par sa nature créée elle-même ; et il prétendrait parvenir à une connaissance parfaite de son Créateur !

La réponse à ces cinq questions est facile à donner ; aussi celui qui les pose ne la donne-t-il pas. Dieu seul peut monter aux cieux et, de là, descendre pour communiquer avec sa créature (Genèse 28.12), pour juger (Genèse 11.7), pour secourir (Psaumes 18.10) ; Dieu seul peut faire souffler et arrêter la vent (Psaumes 104.7) ; enfermer l'eau dans les nuages dont il se revêt (Job 26.8) ou la répandre à son gré (Job 38.37). Lui seul a fixé les limites de cette terre qui nous paraît immense (Job 26.7).

Dans ses mains, littéralement : dans ses deux poings.

Son nom : le nom qui pourrait faire connaître dans son essence un Etre dont les œuvres elles-mêmes dépassent tellement notre entendement.

Le nom de son fils. 8.30, nous avons vu la Sagesse personnifiée collaborer avec Dieu dans l'œuvre de la création. Ce même ouvrier, (dans 8.30, le mot amôn, que nous avons rendu par ouvrière, est masculin) est présenté ici comme un fils du Créateur pour bien marquer l'intimité de la relation qui existe entre Dieu et cette puissance médiatrice. Comparez le passage du Rig-Véda : Qui a vu le Premier-né ? où était le sang, la vie, l'âme du monde ? Qui est parvenu à demander cela à quelqu'un qui l'aurait su ?
