Je suis homme de paix. L'étranger haineux prête à l'Israélite paisible les dispositions hostiles qui l'animent lui-même ; avant même qu'il ait parlé (littéralement : Lorsque je vais parler), on l'accuse déjà d'avoir dit du mal.

Ce psaume, avec sa menace et sa plainte, est resté l'expression des sentiments du peuple de Dieu vis-à-vis du monde idolâtre. Nous avons ici comme l'adieu menaçant jeté aux nations étrangères, dont les Juifs de la dispersion ont eu tant à souffrir, l'effort du sentiment national pour se dégager d'un entourage profane et pour s'élever à la rencontre du Dieu vivant.
