Psaumes 19.7

Yahweh's law is perfect, restoring the soul. Yahweh's testimony is sure, making wise the simple.
Les Saintes Écritures nous apportent plus que le jour ou la nuit, que l'air que nous respirons ou que la lumière du soleil. Pour que l'homme puisse sortir de sa déchéance, il a besoin de la Parole de Dieu. Le mot original traduit par « loi » peut être assimilé à « doctrine », il peut être compris dans le sens de « tout ce qui nous enseigne au travers de la religion ».

Cette entité est parfaite ; elle tend à convertir ou à détourner l'âme du péché et du monde, vers Dieu et sa Sainteté. Elle nous montre notre état pécheur et misérable, loin de Dieu, et la nécessité de retourner à Lui. Cette recommandation est sûre : celui qui est dans une certaine recherche et qui croit en ce que Dieu dit, devient sage, et est en vue d'acquérir son salut. C'est une bonne démarche vers le chemin du devoir. C'est une fontaine de réconforts vivifiants et un fondement certain pour nos espérances.

Les commandements divins sont droits, comme d'ailleurs ils doivent l'être et en tant que tels ils réjouissent le cœur. Les commandements du Seigneur sont purs, saints, justes et bons. Avec eux nous découvrons notre besoin d'avoir un Sauveur et aussi comment découvrir le merveilleux évangile. C'est par eux que le Saint-Esprit émerveille les yeux ; ils nous conduisent à la perception de notre péché et de notre misère, ils nous conduisent sur le chemin du devoir. La crainte du Seigneur est la vraie religion, elle purifie notre chemin, à jamais. Les lois cérémonielles de ce monde passent mais la loi relative à la crainte de Dieu est toujours la même. Les jugements du Seigneur, ses préceptes, tous cela est vérité ; ils sont la droiture même et ils ne se contredisent pas ; on ne peut les mettre en défaut.

L'or est dédié uniquement au corps et au temps présent ; mais la grâce est dédiée à l'âme et concerne l'éternité. La Parole de Dieu, reçue par la foi, est plus précieuse que l'or ; Elle est agréable à l'âme, aussi douce que du miel. Les plaisirs des sens sont rapidement ternis, et jamais satisfaits ; mais ceux de la religion sont substantiels et donnent toujours satisfaction ; il n'y a en eux aucun risque d'excès.

Psaumes 19.1-14
