J'ai demandé une chose à l'Eternel, [et] je la requerrai [encore], c'est que j'habite en la maison de l'Eternel tous les jours de ma vie, pour contempler la présence ravissante de l'Eternel, et pour visiter soigneusement son palais.

World English Bible One thing I have asked of Yahweh, that I will seek after, that I may dwell in the house of Yahweh all the days of my life, to see Yahweh's beauty, and to inquire in his temple.

4 à 6 Le palais de l'Eternel.

La chose que... Ce ne sont pas les ennemis qui préoccupent le psalmiste. La seule chose qu'il demande, c'est qu'il puisse habiter auprès de l'Eternel (Psaumes 15.1 ; 23.6 ; 26.8). C'est là la seule chose nécessaire que Jésus aussi nous invite à rechercher (Luc 10.42 ; Jean 6.29 ; 15.4).

La beauté de l'Eternel. On pourrait traduire aussi : la bienveillance de l'Eternel, ou comme Psaumes 90.17 : le regard favorable. La maison de l'Eternel, avec le culte qui s'y célébrait, était pour le psalmiste une révélation de la miséricorde et de la sainteté divines. Le désir qu'il exprime ici fait penser à la joie qu'éprouva l'enfant Jésus à se trouver dans le temple (Luc 2.46).
