Les âmes sauvées peuvent annoncer la fidélité de Dieu, Sa justice et Son amour ; mais en ce qui concerne les morts, ils ne peuvent ni recevoir le réconfort divin, ni émettre une quelconque louange. Le psalmiste est résolu à persévérer dans la prière, étant vraiment motivé par l'espérance d'une délivrance qui tarde à venir. Le fait que les réponses à nos prières sont quelquefois longues à parvenir ne doit pas nous empêcher de persévérer dans notre dialogue avec Dieu. Plus nos épreuves sont importantes, plus nos prières doivent être ferventes et pleines de sérieux. Rien ne chagrine plus un enfant de Dieu que de perdre de vue son Maître ; il n'y a rien de plus redoutable, pour le chrétien, que le rejet de son âme par Dieu. Si le soleil est caché par les nuages, la terre s'assombrit ; mais si le soleil devait quitter l'environnement terrestre, nous serions alors dans un véritable cachot ! Même ceux qui sont destinés par Dieu à recevoir des bénédictions peuvent être exposés momentanément à des instants très difficiles.

Remarquez bien à quel point ces profondes terreurs ont assailli le psalmiste. Si nos amis se sont éloignés de nous, à cause de leur destinée ou même la mort, cela représente pour nous une véritable affliction. Ainsi en est-il de l'état de calamité que vit un homme de bien. Ce sentiment s'applique ici particulièrement à Christ. Ne soyons pas tentés de penser que Jésus a souffert uniquement à Gethsémané ou sur le calvaire. Sa vie entière a été marquée par le travail et la souffrance ; Il a été affligé comme nul autre, et ce depuis sa jeunesse. Il a été préparé à cette terrible mort durant toute sa vie. Aucun homme ne pourrait partager de telles souffrances pour le rachat des autres. Tous l'ont abandonné et se sont enfuis. Nous t'abandonnons souvent Seigneur Jésus ; mais Toi, ne nous abandonne pas, n'ôte pas le Saint-Esprit de notre âme !
