Les six sentences des versets 10-12 sont tirées de Psaumes 14.1-3.

On discute si la première : il n'y a pas de juste, pas même un seul, doit être considérée comme une citation, ou si c'est une parole de l'apôtre, que les déclarations empruntées au Psaume confirment.

En effet, le Psaume porte dans les Septante : "il n'en est pas qui pratique le bien, pas un seul."

Paul aurait modifié ce texte et écrit : pas de juste, pas même un seul, pour résumer la pensée de tout le morceau : l'humanité privée de justice devant Dieu.

Cependant il nous paraît plus naturel de penser que la citation commence aussitôt après la formule : selon qu'il est écrit.

- Après la description générale de l'état de péché, (versets 10-12) quatre sentences nous montrent cette perversité qui se manifeste par la parole. (versets 13,14)

Les deux premières sont empruntées au Psaumes 5.10. Leur gosier est un sépulcre ouvert signifie suivant les uns que leur langage exhale une odeur malsaine de cadavre, suivant les autres qu'il est semblable à un gouffre qui demande toujours de nouvelles victimes à engloutir.

Un venin d'aspic est sous leurs lèvres, provient du Psaumes 140.4.

Enfin verset 14 est une citation libre de Psaumes 10.7.
