Ce verset est la transition à ce qui suit : l'horizon du prophète va s'élargir pour un moment, son regard se porter vers le sud, puis vers le nord, bien au-delà des frontières de Juda et des pays voisins.

Car il anéantit tous les dieux de la terre. Moab avait pour divinité nationale Camos, et Ammon, Moloch (Jérémie 48.16 ; 49.1) et c'était sans doute leur hostilité contre le Dieu d'Israël qui poussait ces deux nations à l'arrogance envers le peuple de Juda (ainsi s'explique le car... ). Leurs dieux, aussi bien que ceux des autres nations païennes, seront anéantis, c'est-à-dire : ces nations mêmes seront détruites, ce qui manifestera le néant de leurs divinités (Esaïe 46.1).

Chacun du lieu où il est : non pas chaque peuple, mais chaque individu ; ce sera l'avénement du culte personnel et aussi du culte en esprit et en vérité (Jean 4.23-24 ; comparez Sophonie 3.9 ; Malachie 1.11). Les tableaux analogues d'Esaïe 2.2 et suivants, Michée 4.1-2, sont destinés plutôt à dépeindre la conversion des nations à l'Eternel.

Les îles des nations : le monde païen en général, les pays lointains, qu'on se représentait comme des îles, d'après l'analogie de ce qu'on connaissait de plus éloigné du côté de l'ouest. La promesse contenue à la fin de ce verset a une grande portée et ne pourra être complètement accomplie que quand la prophétie de Jésus, Matthieu 24.14 sera elle-même réalisée.

Les menaces contenues dans tout ce morceau contre Moab et Ammon se sont accomplies en ce que, cinq ans après la ruine de Jérusalem, Nébucadnetsar ravagea et soumit leurs territoires, et en ce que, retranchés du nombre des peuples, ils sont maintenant fondus avec les Arabes. Quant au détail de la prophétie, relatif à l'occupation des pays de Moab et d'Ammon par le reste de Juda (verset 9), voir ce qui a été dit à propos des Philistins (verset 7).
