ἐπ’ ἐλπίδι ζωῆς αἰωνίου, ἣν ἐπηγγείλατο ὁ ἀψευδὴς θεὸς πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων

World English Bible in hope of eternal life, which God, who can't lie, promised before time began;

Toute foi, toute connaissance de la vérité et toute piété a pour dernier but cette vie éternelle, dont l'espérance fait la force du croyant ici-bas, même au milieu des plus pénibles renoncements. (Colossiens 1.5)

Ce que Dieu a promis, c'est "la vie éternelle." (Le que pourrait aussi se rapporter à "connaissance de la vérité," mais ce rapport est moins naturel.)

Il faut entendre par les temps éternels, les temps les plus anciens, l'histoire de la rédemption commençant avec la promesse faite à Eve ; (Genèse 3.15) car Paul parle de promesse, et cette expression ne saurait désigner le dessein de Dieu qui a précédé la fondation du monde. (Ephésiens 3.9 ; 2Timothée 1.9)
