Job arrive rapidement au point capital qui anime le désaccord. Ses amis ont soutenu jusqu'à présent que ceux qui sont justes et bons, prospèrent toujours en ce monde, et qu'à part le méchant, personne ne peut connaître la misère et la détresse. Job, quant à lui, soutient le contraire : il assure qu'il est commun de voir le méchant prospérer, et de trouver le juste dans l'affliction. Cependant, il y a trop d'ardeur dans ce que Job annonce ici : Dieu, en effet, n'envoie pas la souffrance par plaisir. Quand notre esprit est excité par un conflit ou par le mécontentement, nous avons alors besoin de surveiller nos propos.
