Cette pensée devient plus frappante encore si l'on se représente vivement l'image par laquelle Paul l'exprime : l'œil est certainement l'un des plus précieux membres du corps, mais lorsqu'il tend vers un objet, il ne peut y atteindre sans la main, ou bien lorsqu'il est blessé ou troublé par quelque corps étranger, il ne saurait s'en délivrer sans la main.
La tête est infiniment supérieure aux pieds et, toutefois, elle ne peut sans eux exécuter ses pensées. C'est que ni l'œil, ni la main, ni les pieds,ni la tête ne sont rien par eux-mêmes, mais uniquement par l'esprit qui les anime et dont ils sont les instruments. Ainsi doit-il en être dans le corps de Christ, animé de son Esprit.
