Pour bien comprendre ces paroles qui nous ouvrent une vue profonde sur la nature de l'homme et sur les rapports de la création et de la rédemption, il faut se souvenir que, selon l'Ecriture, l'homme est composé de l'esprit, de l'âme et du corps dans une indivisible unité. (1Thessaloniciens 5.23)

L'esprit est la faculté la plus élevée, celle qui met l'homme en rapport avec Dieu ; l'âme (Grec : psyché) est l'élément de la vie, que nous avons en commun avec tous les animaux de là, la traduction corps animal, doué d'âme (en latin anima, voir 1Corinthiens 2.14, note), avec l'immense différence toutefois, que chez l'homme cette âme est unie à un esprit immortel qui la rend intelligente et en fait le siège, non seulement de sensations et d'instincts, mais de sentiments dont nous avons la conscience et la responsabilité.

Le corps enfin est l'organe matériel de l'esprit et de l'âme. Dieu, en créant l'homme en âme vivante (verset 45, Grec : pour une âme vivante, c'est-à-dire pour grandir toujours plus dans la vie véritable dont la source lui était ouverte, Genèse 2.7-9), voulait que le développement graduel de sa créature se fit par un progrès ascendant vers la spiritualité.

L'esprit de l'homme, en communion vivante avec l'esprit de Dieu, aurait pénétré l'âme, et par elle le corps, l'être tout entier. Ainsi, l'esprit aurait dominé sur toutes les facultés de l'homme, comme l'homme devait dominer sur la nature entière, et il serait parvenu à sa destination glorieuse sans passer par la mort et la résurrection.

Mais, par la chute, toute cette harmonie a été brisée : la communion avec Dieu, source de la vie, fut interrompue ; l'esprit, au lieu de régner, tomba sous la domination de l'âme et du corps, c'est-à-dire des passions et des sens ; l'ordre du progrès fut interverti ; l'homme, destiné à être spirituel, devint charnel et terrestre, et le roi de la création fut l'esclave du péché et de la mort.

- Tel est le premier homme Adam, auquel l'apôtre oppose, dans un puissant contraste, le dernier Adam, (verset 45) Jésus-Christ. Né dans notre nature, Christ était sans doute susceptible de souffrir et de mourir ; mais ayant, par cette souffrance même, par son obéissance et par sa mort, "accompli toute justice," il rétablit en sa personne et en sa vie l'harmonie détruite ; l'esprit qui, en lui, était le temple de l'Esprit de Dieu, pénétra de sa vie l'âme et le corps ; aussi "les liens de la mort ne purent-ils le retenir ;" il fut "vivifié en esprit," (1Pierre 3.18) il ressuscita "par l'Esprit de sainteté" (Romains 1.4) avec un corps glorifié.

Il a donc été fait, pour lui-même et pour les siens en esprit vivifiant, (verset 45) ce que Paul oppose à l'âme vivante du premier Adam.

Christ, en demeurant dans ses rachetés, les rend semblables à lui en toutes choses. (1Corinthiens 15.48,49 ; Romains 8.11 ; comparez 1Corinthiens 6.5) Leur corps nouveau, "conforme au corps glorieux du Christ," (Philippiens 3.21) est ici appelé corps spirituel, par opposition au corps animal (ou psychique) d'Adam, (verset 44) parce qu'il sera entièrement pénétré, glorifié par l'Esprit, manifestant au dehors ce que cet esprit est en lui-même, et reflétant l'éternelle sagesse, la sainteté, la beauté morale, l'amour.
