Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I commanded the assemblies of Galatia, you do likewise.

Moreover, brothers, we make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the assemblies of Macedonia;

how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their liberality.

For according to their power, I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord,

begging us with much entreaty to receive this grace and the fellowship in the service to the saints.

This was not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God.

So we urged Titus, that as he made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace.
7
But as you abound in everything, in faith, utterance, knowledge, all earnestness, and in your love to us, see that you also abound in this grace.
8
I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love.
9
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.
12
For this service of giving that you perform not only makes up for lack among the saints, but abounds also through many givings of thanks to God;
13
seeing that through the proof given by this service, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the Good News of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all;
14
while they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, yearn for you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you.
15
Now thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift!

They only asked us to remember the poor--which very thing I was also zealous to do.

hearing of your love, and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all the saints;

For we have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.

For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them.

But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does the love of God remain in him?

Il s'agit de la même collecte dont il est parlé dans Romains 15.25 et suivants Les chrétiens de la Palestine étaient dans le besoin, parce qu'ils avaient, beaucoup plus que d'autres, à souffrir de la persécution.
Les Juifs furent, en effet, dans les premiers temps, les plus violents adversaires de l'Evangile, qui n'avait point encore attiré l'attention des païens.
Paul attachait une grande importance à cette collecte, et pour diverses raisons : outre le secours efficace qu'elle apporterait à des frères souffrants, elle devait être un lien de charité entre les Eglises fondées dans des contrées païennes et celle de Jérusalem, qui conservait encore, contre les premières, beaucoup de préjugés ; c'était rendre le bien pour le mal.
En même temps Paul lui-même, personnellement porteur de ce bienfait, (verset 4) aurait une excellente occasion de montrer aux chrétiens judaïsants combien peu il méritait leur défiance et leur mauvais vouloir envers lui.
En général un tel intérêt pour des frères inconnus élevait les âmes au-dessus des préjugés nationaux, et unissait les chrétiens comme une seule famille. Le paganisme ni le judaïsme n'avaient jamais rien produit de pareil.

La bonne conduite des chrétiens et des églises doit nous interpeler. Il est bon de mettre à part ce que nous pouvons, pour qu'il en soit fait bon usage. Ceux qui sont riches en ce monde, devraient l’être en bonnes œuvres, 1Ti 6:17,18. Une main active ne peut apporter la prospérité, si la bénédiction divine est absente, Proverbes 10:4,22.Timothée et Apollos sont proposés. (1 Corinthiens 16:10-12)
Exhortation à la vigilance dans la foi et l'amour. (1 Corinthiens 16:13-18)
Salutations chrétiennes. (1 Corinthiens 16:19-24)
Qu’est-ce qui peut nous pousser davantage à la charité envers les enfants de Dieu, que le fait de considérer que tout ce que nous avons, provient de Dieu ? Les œuvres de miséricorde sont les fruits authentiques d'un amour véritable envers Dieu, et le « jour du Seigneur », le premier jour de la semaine, est vraiment propice à leur mise en pratique. Les serviteurs de Dieu sont tout à fait dans leur rôle lorsqu'ils mettent en avant la charité, et qu'ils y participent activement. Le cœur d'un serviteur de Dieu doit être auprès de ceux qu’il côtoie, auprès de ses fidèles collaborateurs. Tous nos projets doivent être établis dans la soumission à la Providence Divine, Jacques 4:15.
Les adversaires du Seigneur et l'hostilité envers Sa Parole ne doivent pas briser l’élan des serviteurs de Dieu, ils ne doivent pas entraver leur succès, mais au contraire exciter leur zèle, et leur insuffler une saine détermination ! Ces fidèles serviteurs sont hélas parfois encore plus découragés par la dureté de cœur de leurs auditeurs et la régression de certains membres de l’assemblée, que par l’hostilité de leurs ennemis spirituels...
