1 Jean 1.7

Dans l'exacte mesure où ils marchent dans la lumière comme Dieu lui-même est dans la lumière, dans la mesure où la vérité, la sainteté, l'amour qui sont l'essence de Dieu, se reflètent dans leur vie, les chrétiens ont communion les uns avec les autres.

D'après verset 6, on attendait : "Nous avons communion avec lui (Dieu)," et dans A et quelques Pères on lit en effet : avec lui. Mais cette pensée est si évidente, que Jean la sous-entend pour ne mentionner que ce fruit de notre union avec Dieu, la communion des croyants les uns avec les autres. Ils ne la réaliseront que s'ils marchent dans la lumière, car l'erreur et le péché agissent sur les relations des hommes entre eux comme le dissolvant le plus actif. (Jean 17.21)

Cette purification par le sang de Jésus (le texte reçu porte Jésus-Christ, contre Sin., B. C), que Jean enseigne avec toute l'Ecriture, (1Jean 2.2 ; 4.10) n'est pas l'effet de la première appropriation que le pécheur se fait du sacrifice de Christ, et par lequel il est justifié et réconcilié avec Dieu, car il s'agit, dans notre passage, d'hommes qui marchent dans la lumière et sont déjà en communion avec Dieu.

Mais Jean leur montre, dans la puissante et perpétuelle efficace du sacrifice de la croix, un moyen de conserver cette communion, en obtenant toujours de nouveau le pardon des fautes dans lesquelles ils tombent journellement. C'est pourquoi il emploie le verbe au présent : son sang nous purifie, indignant l'action permanente du sacrifice de Christ. Cet immense privilège leur est assuré, si d'autre part ils sont sincères dans leurs efforts pour se tourner constamment vers la lumière.

Du reste, le sang de Jésus, le sacrifice de la croix, en tant qu'il est un moyen de pardon et de réconciliation avec Dieu, est en même temps un moyen de purification intérieure du péché, ou de sanctification, et de la sorte il contribue aussi à affermir l'âme dans la communion avec Dieu.
