Le mot rendu ici par l'épreuve ne se retrouve, dans le Nouveau Testament, que à Jacques 1.3. (Voir la note) Il est employé par les Septante, dans Proverbes 27.21. Il signifie proprement "le moyen par lequel on éprouve."

Les plus récents interprètes lui donnent, dans notre passage, ce sens, qui seul se justifie d'après le grec profane.

D'autres s'en tiennent au sens assez voisin : l'action d'éprouver. La traduction : résultat de l'épreuve, solidité éprouvée, est inadmissible.

Pierre veut dire : "Il faut que vous soyez attristés par diverses épreuves, (verset 6) afin que ce moyen par lequel votre foi est éprouvée, et qui est beaucoup plus précieux que celui par lequel on éprouve l'or périssable (qui cependant est éprouvé par le feu), tourne à votre louange." Le feu est pour le fondeur un agent précieux, indispensable pour purifier l'or.

Bien plus précieuses sont pour Dieu, et pour le croyant qui se place au point de vue de Dieu, les souffrances et les tentations qui éprouvent la foi, pourvu que ce moyen d'éprouver (ou cette action d'éprouver) tourne (grec soit trouvé) à louange et à gloire et à honneur pour le fidèle. Et sans doute plus l'épreuve aura été grande, douloureuse, plus la gloire sera grande aussi.

Mais tout cela se montrera en la révélation de Jésus-Christ, lorsque Jésus-Christ apparaîtra, lui qui seul manifestera les secrets des cœurs. (1Corinthiens 4.5 ; Jacques 1.12) Alors ces persécutions, par lesquelles les lecteurs de l'épître étaient éprouvés et qui pour le présent, les couvraient de honte les couvriront de gloire.

Et pour nous aussi, les croix que nous avons à porter, si elles sont d'abord un sujet d'humiliation, de renoncement, de mort, deviendront notre suprême honneur à l'avènement de Jésus-Christ. (2Corinthiens 4.17 ; Colossiens 3.3,4 ; 2Timothée 1.12 ; 2.8-13)

Quel motif, pour le chrétien, de supporter patiemment l'épreuve, mais aussi de sonder avec soin la réalité de sa foi !
