Il faut remarquer que ces mots par l'hypocrisie indiquent la cause pour laquelle "quelques-uns se détourneront de la foi, s'attachant, etc.," mais que cette hypocrisie est attribuée, non à eux, mais aux docteurs de mensonge, auxquels s'applique aussi tout ce qui suit ; (1Timothée 4.2,3) le jugement sévère de l'apôtre tombe, non sur les séduits, mais sur les séducteurs. (1Timothée 4.1)

La version d'Ostervald donne un sens tout opposé.

- Docteurs de mensonge est un terme qui ne se trouve qu'ici : il est l'équivalent de "faux docteurs" (2Pierre 2.1) ou de faux prophètes. (1Jean 4.1)

- C'est à ceux que l'apôtre attribue cette conscience cautérisée, c'est-à-dire brûlée par un fer chaud, comme les criminels à qui l'on appliquait la marque de leur délit, afin qu'ils fussent reconnus de tout le monde.

Ainsi, veut dire l'apôtre, ces hommes portent dans leur conscience le sceau indubitable du mensonge et de la condamnation. Quelques interprètes ont voulu voir dans ce mot l'image de l'insensibilité, de l'endurcissement de la conscience. Ce sens est moins probable que le premier.
