Roboam, abandonne l'Éternel, il est puni.

- Alors que Roboam se croyait invulnérable et ne craignait absolument pas Jéroboam, il négligea complètement ses pieux engagements. Il est hélas vraiment commun, de voir des hommes, en complète situation de détresse ou de danger, voire proches de la mort, sembler vraiment préoccupés, en ultime recours, à servir Dieu, après avoir complètement mis de côté toute manifestation préalable de piété, avec la Miséricorde et la Grâce qui pouvaient en découler.

Dieu éprouva rapidement Juda, pour inciter le peuple au repentir, avant que les cœurs ne soient complètement endurcis. Il en est de même pour nous : quand nous sommes rappelés à l'ordre par la Providence divine, notre Dieu juste et parfait désire alors nous juger. Si nous nous sommes humiliés de tout cœur, face à cette Providence, on peut dire alors que l'affliction envoyée par le ciel, a produit son fruit ; Dieu, dans Sa Sagesse infinie, saura alors la supprimer, ou l'alléger.

Plus on compare le service pour le Seigneur avec d'autres tâches, plus il apparaît relativement facile à accomplir. Les règles inhérentes à la modération paraissent-elles difficiles à observer ? Celles qui corrigent les abus seront beaucoup plus dures ! Le service divin est synonyme de parfaite liberté ; céder à nos convoitises, par contre, équivaut à l'esclavage.

Roboam n'a pas vraiment fait preuve d'une grande piété. S'il n'a jamais totalement rejeté Dieu, son cœur ne Le recherchait pas spécialement. Remarquez quel était son défaut : il n'a pas servi l'Éternel, parce qu'il ne Le recherchait pas de tout cœur. Il n'a pas prié, comme l'a fait Salomon, pour obtenir la sagesse et la Grâce célestes ; il n'a pas consulté la Parole de Dieu, il n'a pas cherché à suivre Ses ordonnances, ni Ses directives. Il n'a fait aucun cas de la piété, parce que son cœur n'y était pas disposé, et qu'il ne cherchait pas à prendre de bonnes résolutions à ce sujet. Il n'a fait que le mal, parce qu'il ne fut jamais réellement déterminé à pratiquer le bien !
