Le Seigneur ne le délivre pas, mais il exauce sa prière. Il lui répond : "Ma grâce te suffit !"

- "Que cette parole de Jésus-Christ ressuscité et glorieux est consolante ! Elle nous apprend que nous ne pouvons trop nous confier en Dieu, quand nous savons bien nous défier de nous-mêmes...Dieu veut nous guérir, mais en sa manière. Pour s'y accommoder, il faut beaucoup prier..." Quesnel.

Pour que la grâce du Seigneur se déploie dans sa plénitude, il faut que la force naturelle de l'homme soit brisée, que son moi soit crucifié, et que, dans cette infirmité, il consente à ne subsister que par grâce, à ne vivre que de cette grâce. Mais elle suffit, car la puissance divine alors s'accomplit (Grec : "devient parfaite") dans la faiblesse même de son enfant. Paul lui-même en juge ainsi par son expérience. (versets 9,10)

L'apôtre accepte cette dispensation de Dieu, avec la promesse que le Seigneur y a attachée ; et non seulement il l'accepte, mais, puisque telle est la volonté de Dieu pour son bien, il s'en glorifie.

- La puissance de Christ, dit-il ; donc, le Seigneur que Paul a invoqué par trois fois et qui lui a promis sa grâce et sa puissance, c'est Christ. La divinité de Jésus-Christ remplit la vie entière de ses disciples, aussi bien que toutes les pages des saintes Ecritures. (Comparer Actes 7.59,60 ; 9.14 ; 1Corinthiens 1.2)
