"Vous cherchez une preuve que Christ parle en moi ; cherchez plutôt s'il est en vous, si vous êtes dans la foi, si, au lieu de vous sentir approuvés par sa force en vous, vous ne seriez point réprouvés, sans aucun témoignage de l'Esprit en vous. Car pour ce qui nous regarde, nous, j'espère que vous savez le contraire." (verset 6)

- Paroles dignes d'une sérieuse méditation ! d'abord, parce qu'elles reprennent sévèrement le penchant de notre cœur à juger plutôt les autres que nous-mêmes ; et ensuite, parce qu'elles renferment à la fois, d'une part, cette vérité consolante que nous pouvons reconnaître si Christ est en nous, être assurés de son approbation et de son salut, et, d'autre part, une sérieuse admonition contre toute fausse sécurité et toute assurance mal fondée.

Le même apôtre qui partout montre au chrétien la joie et la gloire de savoir avec certitude en qui il a cru, lui rappelle sans cesse aussi sa responsabilité morale, "la crainte et le tremblement" qui fait sa sûreté.

Que ceux qui verraient là une contradiction dogmatique apprennent d'abord à se connaître euxmêmes et les contradictions de leur propre cœur, puis ils discerneront la divine harmonie de ces vérités !
