Now Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son who was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the news came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel; and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it happened, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth.

Méphiboseth, probablement : qui balaie la honte ou Baal (Voir pour Boscheth comme désignation de Baal 11.21 et peut-être 2.8). Dans 1Chroniques 8.34, son nom est Méribbaal : celui qui combat Baal. Voir, pour son histoire subséquente, 2Samuel 9.1-11 ; 16.1-4 ; 19.30.

Cette notice. qui semble être sans aucun lien avec ce qui précède et suit, a pour but de montrer qu'il n'y avait plus personne qui, après la mort d'Isboseth fût en état de soutenir la maison de Saül. Son unique descendant légitime était incapable de régner.
