Ai-je dit un mot ? Me suis-je jamais plaint de ce que vous ne m'ayez pas bâti une demeure digne de moi, ou vous ai-je demandé de le faire ?

A quelqu'un des chefs d'Israël. Le mot hébreu peut signifier aussi : à quelqu'une des tribus d'Israël, expression qui se rapporterait à l'hégémonie qu'ont successivement exercée différentes tribus sur le reste du peuple, à mesure que l'Eternel choisissait un juge dans le sein de l'une d'elles.

Cette parole n'est pas destinée à repousser le projet de David, mais à purifier l'esprit dans lequel il pouvait être conçu, comme s'il s'agissait de rendre service à Dieu. David doit comprendre que ce ne sera pas lui qui rendra un service à Dieu, en lui offrant une demeure, mais que ce sera Dieu qui l'honorera en acceptant cet hommage (Actes 17.24).
