Les Philistins. Ce verset comprend les deux victoires racontées chapitre 5 et sans doute d'autres expéditions plus décisives.

La suprématie. Le mot hébreu signifie proprement le frein de la mère. Plusieurs y ont vu un terme géographique. D'autres l'ont entendu de la puissance qu'avait exercée la ville de Gath, comme métropole, sur les autres villes de la Philistie (1Chroniques 18.1), et qui a dès lors appartenu à Jérusalem. Il nous paraît plus probable que cette expression se rapporte à la domination que les Philistins avaient exercée jusqu'au temps de Saül sur Israël.

David subjugua les Philistins. Ils avaient pendant longtemps, causé de nombreuses difficultés à Israël.

Après les luttes longues et fréquentes des saints, contre les puissances des ténèbres, comme ce fut le cas entre Israël et les Philistins, le « Fils de David » écrasera Ses ennemis sous Ses pieds, faisant de Ses enfants de véritables conquérants.

David frappa les Moabites, et leur fit payer un tribut à Israël. Deux tiers du butin furent détruits, le dernier étant épargné. La ligne qui protégeait ceux qui devaient être ménagés était continue. Que celle de la Grâce salvatrice des âmes, puisse s'étendre à l'extrême !

Le roi frappa les Syriens. Dans toutes ces guerres, David fut protégé, ce qui le poussa dans les psaumes qu'il rédigea, à rendre souvent gloire à Dieu.
