Apollos voulut aller en Achaïe, c'est-à-dire sans doute à Corinthe, ayant appris par Aquilas et Priscille les premiers succès de Paul dans cette ville.

Les frères qui se trouvaient déjà à Ephèse, à la suite du court séjour de l'apôtre, (verset 19) l'y encourageant, écrivirent aux fidèles de Corinthe de le bien recevoir, comme un serviteur de Dieu.

- Ainsi traduisent Calvin, Bèze, Weizsäcker, Holtzmann, Wendt, et cette traduction nous paraît le plus conforme à la construction de la phrase.

Luther, Meyer, Zöckler traduisent : "Les frères écrivirent aux disciples les engageant à le recevoir." D et les versions syriaques ont ici une importante addition, qui nous apprend comment Apollos fut amené à se rendre à Corinthe : "Quelques Corinthiens séjournant à Ephèse et l'ayant entendu, l'exhortèrent à passer (la mer) avec eux dans leur patrie. Et lui, ayant consenti, les Ephésiens écrivirent aux disciples à Corinthe, afin qu'ils reçussent bien cet homme."

C'est-à-dire que, par la grâce divine, qui accompagnait sa prédication, Apollos se rendit très utile aux croyants de Corinthe, il contribua à les éclairer, à les affermir dans la foi.

On sait d'ailleurs, par les épîtres de Paul qu'Apollon exerça une grande influence sur l'Eglise de Corinthe. (1Corinthiens 1.12 ; 3.5 ; 4.6)
