L'Esprit dévoilait à ces disciples que Paul aurait beaucoup à souffrir à Jérusalem, et eux, dans leur tendre sollicitude pour lui, l'exhortaient à n'y point aller. Mais Paul, qui prévoyait bien ces souffrances, allait au-devant d'elles, lié par l'Esprit. (Actes 20.22,23 ; comparez ci-après verset 13)
Cet arrêt de sept jours, malgré la hâte qu'il avait d'être à Jérusalem pour la fête, (Actes 20.16) fut imposé à Paul par les circonstances, le navire qu'il montait devant décharger sa cargaison. (verset 3) Peut-être aussi l'apôtre était il moins pressé, parce que son voyage jusqu'à Tyr s'était effectué plus rapidement qu'il ne comptait.
