L'explication de cette grande théophanie par laquelle s'accomplit la vocation de Moïse appartient à l'exégèse de l'Ancien Testament.

Nous nous bornons à quelques remarques nécessaires à l'intelligence de la pensée d'Etienne :

- 1° Sur ce terme de quarante ans, voir verset 23, note.

- 2° Au lieu de : le mont Sinaï, on lit dans l'Exode : (Exode 3.1) "la montagne de Dieu à Horeb" Ces deux noms sont employés l'un pour l'autre dans le Pentateuque parce qu'ils désignent les deux sommets les plus élevés de la même chaîne de montagnes.

- 3° La voix du Seigneur ; le mot Seigneur est, dans la version grecque des Septante, que citait Etienne, la traduction constante du nom de Jéhovah, l'Eternel. Dans le récit de l'Exode, l'être qui est ici appelé un ange est nommé l'ange de l'Eternel. (Exode 3.2)

- 4° Ote (grec délie) les souliers de tes pieds. C'est là, chez les Orientaux, une marque de respect, comme pour nous de nous découvrir la tête.

- 5° J'ai vu, j'ai vu, nous rendons ainsi l'hébraïsme : voyant, j'ai vu, qui signifie : j'ai très bien vu, c'est là l'expression des tendres compassions de Dieu pour l'oppression de son peuple.

- 6° Je suis descendu est un anthropomorphisme indiquant une révélation ou une action divine pour la délivrance du peuple de Dieu ou le châtiment des méchants. (Genèse 11.5,7 ; 18.21) Le verbe traduit par délivrer a le sens réfléchi : prendre à soi ou pour soi. (Actes 26.17)

- 7° Le texte reçu porte : Je t'enverrai en Egypte, tandis que, selon le vrai texte (Sin., B, A, C, D), Dieu dit : que je t'envoie.

Maintenant, cette mission était le but actuel de la révélation.
