Jean donne au Sauveur trois titres qui caractérisent admirablement son œuvre entière, dans son triple office de Prophète, de Sacrificateur et de Roi.

1° Le témoin fidèle, qui a rendu le plus fidèle témoignage à la vérité par sa vie et par sa mort. (verset 2, note ; Jean 17.6,8 ; 18.37 ; 1Timothée 6.13) Le mot grec martyr ne signifiait originairement que témoin, il a pris chez les chrétiens le sens de témoin endurant des souffrances et la mort. Le Sauveur va rendre témoignage encore dans cette révélation donnée à son disciple (l'idée et l'expression de témoignage sont souvent appliquées à Jésus-Christ par l'apôtre Jean).

2° Le premier né d'entre les morts. Par sa mort et sa résurrection, il a ôté à la mort son aiguillon, au sépulcre sa victoire ; il est, pour tous ceux qui croient en lui, la source d'une vie impérissable, et pour l'âme et pour le corps. (comparez verset 18 et 1Corinthiens 15.20 ; Colossiens 1.18 ; 1Pierre 1.3).

3° Le Prince ou le Dominateur des rois de la terre. Il gouverne par sa toute-puissance les royaumes de ce monde, les fait tous servir à ses desseins et les soumettra tous finalement à son empire. (Matthieu 28.18 ; Philippiens 2.9-11 ; Ephésiens 1.20-22)
