World English Bible The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Par sa vie sainte, par sa mort, par sa résurrection, par toute l'œuvre, qu'il a accomplie pour la rédemption des hommes, Jésus-Christ a vaincu Satan et son empire. (Jean 12.31 ; Hébreux 2.14 ; 1Jean 3.8 ; Apocalypse 3.21 ; 5.5)

Cette victoire a été confirmée par son retour triomphant auprès de Dieu. (verset 5) Les conséquences en sont exposées dans la scène symbolique de versets 7-12. Le combat contre Satan est mené par Michel, l'archange dont le nom signifie : "Qui est semblable à Dieu !" Michel apparaît, dans Daniel 10.13,21 ; 12.1 ; (comparez Jude 9) comme le champion du peuple de Dieu.

Pour relever l'importance de la défaite de l'adversaire, l'auteur énumère tous ses titres (verset 9 ; comparez Apocalypse 20.2). Il le nomme le serpent ancien par allusion à Genèse 3.1 et suivants

C'est aussi la chute que rappellent les mots : celui qui séduit le monde entier, en même temps qu'ils caractérisent l'action constante et universelle de l'Ennemi de Dieu. Celui-ci est encore appelé diable, c'est-à-dire calomniateur, (comparez verset 10, note) et Satan, ce qui signifie l'adversaire.
