Apocalypse 18.9

Alors, les rois de la terre qui ont partagé sa vie lascive et fastueuse pleureront et se lamenteront sur elle, en voyant monter la fumée de son brasier.
Et tous les rois de la terre, qui se sont livrés avec elle à l'impudicité et au luxe, pleureront et se lamenteront à cause d'elle, quand ils verront la fumée de son embrasement.
Tous ceux qui pleuraient sur Babylone, avaient joui de ses plaisirs sensuels, et profité de sa richesse et de son commerce.

Les rois de la terre, qu'elle a poussés dans l'idolâtrie, leur permettant d'être tyranniques envers leurs sujets, lui étaient soumis dans l’obéissance ; il en était de même pour les négociants, ceux qui trafiquaient avec cette ville, jouissant de son aisance, de sa vie dissolue et de ses « honneurs » ; tous ces hommes pleuraient...

Les « partisans » de Babylone ont en fait partagé tous ses plaisirs coupables et ses profits ; par contre ils n’étaient pas du tout disposés à subir ses fléaux ! L'esprit de l'antéchrist est un esprit du monde, et l’affliction subie par cette ville est celle qui est réservée au monde ; ces hommes ne se lamentent pas pour la colère divine subie, mais pour la perte de leurs différents avantages. La magnificence et la richesse des impies ne les concerne pas, par contre elles rendront la vengeance du Seigneur plus dure à supporter.

Il est fait allusion dans ce texte, à la « marchandise spirituelle », quand, non seulement les esclaves, mais aussi les âmes des hommes, sont mentionnés en tant « qu’articles commerciaux », détruisant ainsi des millions d'êtres humains. Cette culpabilité n'a d’ailleurs pas été spécifique à l'antéchrist romain.

Tous ces marchands, comblés par leurs gains et leur prospérité, devraient plutôt apprendre, à obtenir la richesse insondable offerte par Christ ; s’ils persistent dans leurs voies, ils devront pleurer en constatant que leur fortune se sera finalement envolée, et voir s’anéantir toutes les convoitises de leur âme.

La mort, de toute façon, mettra bientôt fin à leur commerce, et toute la richesse de l'impie sera réservée, non seulement a son cercueil et aux vers, mais aussi au feu, celui qui ne s'éteint jamais...

      3 A second said, "Hallelujah! Her smoke goes up forever and ever."
