Dans les cités terrestres, les temples étaient les symboles de la présence de Dieu ; ils rappelaient Dieu au souvenir des hommes et les invitaient à l'adoration.

Dans la cité céleste, Dieu est toujours et parfaitement présent au milieu des hommes ; (verset 3) il n'est donc plus besoin de temple. Alors sera pleinement accomplie la prophétie de Jésus. (Jean 4.21) Ces temps avaient été entrevus déjà par Jérémie 3.16 et suivants

L'Agneau aussi bien que le Dieu tout-puissant, est son temple, parce que la médiation du Sauveur demeure nécessaire aux hommes pour entrer dans la communion de Dieu.

Une parfaite et franche communion avec Dieu, nous apportera d’avantage que toutes les institutions de l'évangile. Quelles autres paroles que celles de ce texte peuvent davantage exprimer l'union et la Co égalité du Fils avec le Père, dans la Divinité ? Quel monde lugubre aurions-nous, si le soleil ne répandait pas sa lumière !

D’où provient, dans ce texte, cette lumière dans le ciel ? C'est la Gloire de Dieu qui éclaire cette ville, et l'Agneau qui en est la Lumière. Dieu, par l’intermédiaire de Christ, sera une Fontaine éternelle de connaissance et de joie pour les saints, dans le ciel. Ce passage nous indique qu’il n'y a pas de nuit : il n'y a donc pas besoin de fermer les portes ; partout règne la paix et la sécurité !

Tout cela nous montre que nous devons être de plus en plus amenés à penser au ciel, un ciel rempli de la Gloire de Dieu, et éclairé par la présence du Seigneur Jésus ! Rien de coupable ni d'impur, d’idolâtre, de faux, de trompeur, ne peut y entrer. Tous les « habitants » sont rendus parfaits, dans la sainteté.

Aujourd’hui, ici-bas, les saints ne peuvent que constater la présence d’un triste « amalgame » de corruption, qui les entrave dans leur service pour le Seigneur, et qui altère leur communion avec Lui ; mais, dès leur entrée dans lieu très saint (spirituel), ils sont lavés dans la « cuve » du Sang de Christ, et sont présentés ensuite au Père, sans aucune tache !

Nul n'est admis dans le ciel s'il se livre à l'abomination. Il ne s'y trouve aucun hypocrite, ni aucun menteur. Puisque rien d'impur ne peut entrer dans les lieux célestes, puissions-nous être interpellés par les visions décrites dans ce texte, et utiliser toutes nos compétences à parfaire notre sainteté dans la crainte de Dieu !
