Apocalypse 6.2

Or, je regardai, et voici un cheval blanc, et celui qui était monté dessus avait un arc, et on lui donna une couronne, et il partit en vainqueur, et pour remporter la victoire.
Ensuite je vois un cheval blanc. Son cavalier tient un arc. Il reçoit un prix, il est déjà vainqueur et il part pour être encore vainqueur.
Et voici qu’apparut un cheval blanc. Son cavalier était armé d’un arc. On lui remit une couronne (de lauriers), et il partit en vainqueur, de victoire en victoire.

Le symbole des chevaux de diverses couleurs est emprunté à Zacharie Zacharie 1.8 et suivants ; Zacharie 6.1-8.

Dans la vision de Jean leur nombre est nettement limité à quatre, ils ont des cavaliers et le cheval blanc paraît le premier. Les généraux qui faisaient à Rome leur entrée triomphale montaient un cheval blanc et portaient une couronne. On en a conclu que ce premier cavalier représentait Rome victorieuse du monde. Mais le triomphe de l'empire romain était un fait accompli, et non plus à venir, au moment où l'Apocalypse fut composée. D'autres ont pensé aux Parthes qui, à la fin du règne de Néron, menaçaient l'empire de leurs invasions.

Dans Apocalypse 19.11 et suivants, le cavalier monté sur un cheval blanc, c'est le Messie qui vient pour le jugement. Plusieurs interprètes estiment qu'il en est de même dans notre passage, mais Christ ne saurait être tout ensemble l'agneau qui ouvre le livre et le cavalier qui sort du livre ; et il serait étrange qu'il apparût sur le commandement de l'un des quatre êtres vivants.

La vision des sceaux se fonde sur Matthieu 24.6 et suivants, où est décrite ce que l'on appelait la période des "douleurs du Messie." Le tableau se termine par ce trait : "Et cet Evangile du royaume sera prêché par toute la terre, pour servir de témoignage à toutes les nations." (Matthieu 24.14)

Le cheval blanc, monté par un cavalier qui sort en vainqueur et pour vaincre, représenterait donc la marche triomphante de l'Évangile à travers le monde.
