Comme Sulammith ne répond point, le berger la compare à une colombe qui se cache dans les fentes des rochers ; il désire voir sa figure ou du moins entendre sa voix.

L'église est la « colombe » de Christ, mentionnée dans ce texte ; elle revient vers Lui, comme celle qui revint vers Noé, à la fin du déluge.

Christ est le Rocher, le seul lieu dans lequel l’église puisse se sentir en sécurité, et se trouver à l’aise, telle une colombe protégée, lorsqu'elle est poursuivie par des oiseaux de proie. Christ appelle l'église à s’approcher sans crainte du trône de la Grâce, là où elle bénéficie d’un « Souverain Sacrificateur » parfait. L’église peut s’adresser à Lui librement, sans crainte d'être réprimandée ni d'être repoussée. Pour Dieu, la voix de la prière est douce et agréable ; ceux qui sont sanctifiés en Jésus-Christ sont vraiment purs aux yeux de Dieu.

Les premières manifestations de mauvaises pensées et de désirs coupables, les vaines poursuites des attraits du monde, les mauvaises fréquentations, les manques à la vérité, tout ce qui permet de confondre une âme « rachetée » avec le monde, sont des « petits renards » qui doivent être éliminés. Ce texte invite les croyants, par cette image, à mortifier leurs appétits et leurs passions coupables. Nous devons rejeter tout ce que qui nous entrave dans la pratique des bonnes œuvres.

« Il fait paître son troupeau parmi les lis ; » cette image est une manifestation de la présence de la Grâce de Christ parmi les croyants. Le Seigneur est tendre envers tout Son peuple. Il appartient aux siens de croire cela, lors de l’épreuve, afin qu’ils soient préservés des tentations mauvaises.

La période de la dispensation juive et de la loi a été remplacée par celle de l’Évangile : le réconfort spirituel de ce Dernier allait faire suite au refroidissement des enfants d’Israël.

Traversons les « montagnes de Béther », « ces montagnes qui nous éloignent, » de ce jour de lumière et d'amour. Christ franchit chaque montagne qui nous sépare de Lui, pour nous amener dans Sa demeure !
