L'apôtre réitère ici expressément son affirmation de la préexistence de Christ avant toutes choses.

Il aurait pu dire avec saint Jean : (Jean 1.1) Il était avant toutes choses ; mais comme, au lieu de faire, avec cet évangéliste, l'histoire de la Parole éternelle, il embrasse du regard la permanence de l'être en Jésus-Christ, il dit : il est.

- Mais il ajoute ici un attribut divin de la plus haute importance : "Non seulement toutes choses..," ont été créées par lui et pour lui, mais elles subsistent en lui. La puissance et l'action créatrices dont il est la source sont essentielles à la conservation de l'univers, qui, abandonné à lui-même, rentrerait dans le néant. "Il porte toutes choses par sa parole puissante." (Hébreux 1.3)
