Colossiens 1.28

C'est lui que nous annonçons, exhortant tout homme et enseignant tout homme en toute sagesse, afin de rendre tout homme parfait en Jésus-Christ.
Ainsi, nous annonçons le Christ à tout être humain. Nous avertissons et instruisons chacun, avec toute la sagesse possible, afin de rendre chacun spirituellement adulte dans l’union avec le Christ.

Ce n'est pas seulement pour combattre le particularisme juif que l'apôtre insiste tant sur ce mot tout homme ; mais parce qu'il ne croyait pas avoir rempli sa tâche aussi longtemps qu'il n'avait pas instruit et averti chacun de ceux sur qui pouvait s'exercer son ministère. (Comparer Actes 20.31)

- Au reste, le but de la prédication est de conduire tout homme à la perfection. Mais cette perfection est tout entière en Christ, et quiconque est en Lui sera conduit à ce glorieux but par le seul développement de la vie de Christ au dedans de lui. C'est là la sagesse souveraine à laquelle Paul emprunte toute lumière, il n'en connaît point d'autre.

Il faut remarquer encore sur ce verset :

1° qu'il y a une intention polémique contre les faux docteurs dans ces premiers mots : lui (et lui seul) que nous, nous annonçons ;

2° que ces termes : "présenter tout homme" (sous-entendu : à Dieu) reportent la pensée au jour du jugement, aussi bien que ces mots : "l'espérance de la gloire." (verset 27) Paul présentant à Dieu, en ce jour solennel, une âme immortelle avertie, instruite par lui, c'est une grande pensée, effacée par nos versions ordinaires qui traduisent : "rendre tout homme parfait."
