La circoncision, à laquelle les docteurs judaïsants de Colosses attachaient sans doute une haute importance, mais sans en reconnaître la signification spirituelle, était le symbole de la purification de la chair, du renouvellement de l'homme pécheur.

Tout cela se réalise dans le croyant par son union vivante avec Christ, sans que le signe opéré par la main des hommes soit encore nécessaire. Cette régénération de notre être entier par le dépouillement du vieil homme, que l'apôtre appelle ici le corps de la chair, et par la naissance de l'homme nouveau, est plus complètement développée Colossiens 3.9,10, et dans sa causalité intime, ici même, verset 12.

- Le texte reçu porte : "le corps des péchés de la chair ;" les mots soulignés, non authentiques ici, ont été empruntés à Romains 6.6, où l'idée est à peu près la même. (Voir la note.)

- C'est ce renouvellement moral, dont la circoncision était l'image, que Paul appelle circoncision de Christ, parce que c'est lui qui l'opère.
