Colossiens 3.18

Femmes, obéissez à votre mari, comme vous devez le faire dans le Seigneur.

18 à 25 Les devoirs de la famille chrétienne.

L'apôtre reproduit ici (verset 18 jusqu'au Colossiens 4.1) les devoirs des divers membres de la famille, qu'il a retracés Ephésiens 5.22 jusqu'à 6 : 9. (Voir les notes et comparez 1Pierre 2.18 ; 3.1 et suivants et verset 7)

Le texte reçu dit : "à vos propres maris." Ce mot souligné, emprunté en Ephésiens 5.22, n'est pas authentique ici.

- Cette soumission de la femme, par cela même qu'elle est convenable dans le Seigneur, c'est-à-dire dans sa communion, en harmonie avec son Esprit, n'emporte rien de servile, rien de l'esclavage oriental de la femme. Son égalité spirituelle avec son mari est, du reste, garantie par verset 19. Mais le devoir de la soumission subsiste ; là où elle manque, ce ne peut être qu'au détriment de l'union conjugale. (Comparer Ephésiens 5.22-24, où ce devoir est abondamment motivé.)

Les épîtres, surtout destinées à afficher la gloire de la Grâce Divine, et à magnifier le Seigneur Jésus, montrent explicitement quels sont les devoirs de la vie chrétienne. En fait, nous ne devons jamais séparer nos privilèges, des devoirs que nous dicte l'Évangile.

Les épouses doivent être soumises à leur mari. Il ne s’agit pas ici d’une soumission « aveugle », à un seigneur violent, ni à un tyran sévère, mais à leur propre mari, ce qui doit être un véritable engagement et un devoir affectueux. Les maris, quant à eux, doivent aimer leur épouse avec une tendre et fidèle affection. Quant aux enfants obéissants, ce sont les plus aptes à prospérer. Les parents doivent les élever avec tendresse.

Les serviteurs doivent s’appliquer à leur tâche et obéir aux ordres de leurs maîtres en tous points, accomplissant ainsi leur devoir envers Dieu, leur Maître céleste. Ils doivent être à la fois, justes et appliqués, sans préjugés égoïstes, sans hypocrisie, ni fausse conduite. Les serviteurs qui craignent Dieu sont justes et fidèles lorsqu'ils œuvrent sous le regard de leur maître, car ils savent que Dieu les regarde également. Ils travaillent avec diligence, efficacement et sans paresse ; ils accomplissent leur tâche dans la joie, satisfaits de constater que la Providence divine les a placés ainsi. Pour encourager de tels serviteurs, qu'ils sachent qu'en servant leurs maîtres, sous le regard de Christ, ils servent en fait ce Dernier, qui, à la fin, leur attribuera leur récompense glorieuse. Par contre, celui qui accomplit mal sa tâche recevra sa juste rétribution. Dieu punira le serviteur injuste, comme Il récompensera celui qui est fidèle ; il en va de même pour les maîtres qui agissent mal envers leurs subordonnés : le Juge de la terre agira en toute Justice envers ces maîtres et ces serviteurs. Les deux se tiendront sur une « balance », au jour du Jugement.

La véritable piété pourrait vraiment rendre le monde heureux, si elle prédominait en tous lieux, influençant chaque situation et chaque relation de vie ! Mais les contestataires permanents, peu soucieux d’accomplir leurs devoirs, se trompent eux-mêmes, tout en adressant leurs reproches injustifiés à l'Évangile.
