Et tu te souviendras... Rien de plus touchant que cet appel au souvenir des douleurs attachées à l'état de servage, souvenir qui doit éveiller dans le cœur d'Israël un sentiment d'intérêt compatissant pour ceux qui servent au milieu de lui. Au jour du sabbat, ils participent en quelque sorte à la délivrance qui fut accordée au peuple entier. On explique souvent la différence entre le texte du Deutéronome et celui de l'Exode, en supposant que le quatrième commandement (et de même le deuxième, le cinquième et le dixième) ne contenaient primitivement qu'une simple et brève défense, comme les autres, et que les développements qui l'expliquent sont des adjonctions postérieures provenant de mains différentes. Mais il nous paraît plus aisé d'admettre que Moïse lui-même ait substitué, non pas un motif à un autre, mais à la raison du repos hebdomadaire un motif touchant à l'observer, que de supposer qu'un document de l'importance du Décalogue ait été exposé à subir des adjonctions de la main de celui-ci ou de celui-là, dans tel sens ou dans tel autre.
