J'ai parlé en mon coeur, disant : Voici, je suis devenu grand et j'ai acquis de la sagesse plus que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon coeur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de connaissance ;

16 à 18 Comme je m'étais livré à la recherche du bonheur sur la voie de la sagesse, l'insuccès de mes efforts a rejailli sur la sagesse, elle-même. Car impossible de dire que je n'en eusse pas assez (verset 16), ou que je l'aie compromise en y mêlant la folie (verset 17). De cela je conclus que la sagesse n'est bonne qu'à attrister par la constatation que tout est vanité, y compris elle-même.

Tous ceux qui ont régné avant moi à Jérusalem. Salomon était le second roi qui régnât à Jérusalem ; mais notre auteur, vivant beaucoup plus tard et ayant présente à la pensée toute la suite de rois issus de David, en place, par un anachronisme voulu sans doute, la mention dans la bouche de son Salomon fictif.
