4 à 8 A l'appui des versets 2 et 3, l'auteur trace le tableau de l'agitation stérile de toutes choses ici-bas. L'homme est en quelque sorte placé, lui si faible, au milieu d'immenses rouages, qui fonctionnent sans relâche (astres, verset 5 ; air, verset 6, eau, verset 7), et qui frappent incessamment ses yeux et ses oreilles (verset 8), mais ne le satisfont jamais par la constatation d'un progrès.

Le nom de Dieu est absent de ce morceau : nous avons ici le spectacle que l'univers présente à qui le considère en lui-même, abstraction faite de sa relation avec son Créateur et son Maître. Les générations se succèdent (verset 4), sans qu'un pas semble avoir été fait vers un meilleur état des choses, vers un profit réel, vers un repos, Le psalmiste reçoit de la contemplation de la nature, et en particulier de celle du soleil et de sa course journalière (Psaumes 8.1-3 ; 19.1-6), une impression toute différente, car il croit et il adore sans chercher à comprendre, tandis que l'Ecclésiaste est un sage qui veut arriver à se rendre compte du pourquoi des choses. Au reste, s'il fait ici abstraction de Dieu, il en viendra, en fin de compte, à lui donner la place d'honneur, la place suprême dans ses préoccupations (12.15).

Une génération s'en va. Voilà donc, s'écrie ici Jérôme, la terre, faite pour l'homme, qui subsiste, et l'homme, le seigneur de la terre, qui n'y vit qu'un jour ! Qu'est-ce qui, plus que cela, mérite le nom de vanité ? Cependant l'accent doit être mis ici, non sur la rapide disparition des générations humaines, mais plutôt sur l'absence de progrès dans l'histoire de l'humanité.

Subsiste toujours, la même. S'il y avait un progrès général, on accepterait plus aisément la brièveté de la vie.

Tout, ici-bas se transforme et jamais ne stagne. L'homme, après tout son travail, n'est pas plus proche de trouver le repos que le soleil, le vent, ou le courant de la rivière. Son âme ne trouvera aucun repos, à moins qu'il ne l'obtienne de Dieu.
