Ecclésiaste 10.8

Celui qui creuse la fosse, y tombera ; et celui qui coupe la haie, le serpent le mordra.
Celui qui creuse une fosse y tombera, celui qui fait une brèche dans une clôture sera mordu par un serpent.

8 à 11 Par suite des fautes de ceux qui gouvernent, il est pour la société des temps difficiles, dans lesquels il faut user de patience et de prudence. Vouloir trop hâtivement tout rectifier est une entreprise pleine de dangers. On risque d'échouer, soit en se laissant aller à des actes coupables qui amèneraient votre perte, soit simplement en s'abusant sur l'emploi des talents et des forces dont on dispose, et sur le succès possible d'efforts bien intentionnés, mais intempestifs. Pour réussir, il est trois règles à observer : prendre d'intelligentes précautions (versets 8 et 9) ; faire des préparatifs convenables (verset 10) ; choisir le bon moment (verset 11).

Toute activité a ses périls, contre lesquels il faut se mettre en garde. Telle est la vérité dont quatre exemples vont faire foi.

Tel qui creuse un fossé. Il ne faut pas citer ici Proverbes 26.27 ; il ne s'agit pas d'une fosse qu'on creuse dans l'espoir qu'un ennemi y tombera, mais d'un simple travail, aussi innocent que les trois suivants.

Y tombe : peut y tomber.
