Ce même Jésus-Christ, ainsi élevé au-dessus de la création tout entière, ayant toute puissance au ciel et sur la terre, est spécialement le Chef de l'Eglise : (Colossiens 1.16-18) il en est la tête (Grec :), "elle est son corps"

Cette image, si admirable de justesse et de profondeur, à la fois si facile à saisir et mystérieuse revient souvent sous la plume de Paul. (Romains 12.5 ; 1Corinthiens 6.15 ; 10.16,17 ; 12.12,13,27 ; Colossiens 1.18,22,24) Elle nous fait pénétrer dans le rapport intime, vivant, réel, qui existe entre Christ et son Eglise. La volonté, la pensée, la vie, tout dépend de la tête, le reste du corps n'est rien sans elle, ne subsiste que par elle. Tel est Christ à l'égard de l'Eglise.

- Cette Eglise, corps de Christ, est encore appelée ici la plénitude de Celui qui accomplit (ou remplit) tout en tous, c'est-àdire la plénitude de Christ lui-même.

Comment exposer la pensée profonde de l'apôtre, rendue plus difficile encore par les termes mêmes de l'original, et qui tous ont été expliqués de tant de manières différentes ?

L'Eglise est la plénitude de Christ, dans un sens passif, c'est-à-dire que ce n'est pas elle qui remplit ou complète Christ, comme étant son corps (idée de Calvin et d'autres) ; mais, au contraire, c'est Christ qui la remplit de sa présence, de sa gloire, de toutes ses grâces, de sa vie, en un mot, de lui-même. C'est en elle qu'il manifeste sa gloire, ses perfections, aux yeux de l'univers entier, et ainsi il remplit et accomplit tout en tous.

Non seulement il accomplit toute l'œuvre divine en chacun des membres de son corps, jusqu'à ce qu'ils parviennent "à la stature de sa plénitude," (Ephésiens 4.13) mais il remplit la création tout entière (Ephésiens 1.10) et la conduit aux fins voulues par le conseil et la sagesse de Dieu. (Ephésiens 1.21,22 ; Colossiens 1.16-18)

D'autres entendent par "Celui qui remplit tout en tous" Dieu le Père, dont la plénitude de la divinité habite en Christ et en son Eglise. (Colossiens 2.9 ; Ephésiens 3.19) Cette pensée est vraie au fond et dans les résultats définitifs de la rédemption ; mais l'ensemble de notre passage, son sens immédiat conduit plutôt à l'interprétation indiquée d'abord, car évidemment l'apôtre y décrit les rapports profonds, l'unité vivante de Christ et de l'Eglise, qui est son corps et sa plénitude.

"Jésus-Christ retrace (reproduit) sa vie et accomplit de nouveau ses mystères dans son corps mystique ; c'est lui qui souffre dans les martyrs, les malades, les pauvres, etc., qui prie et gémit, qui est humble, doux, obéissant et charitable dans ses membres, et qui s'accomplit en eux selon qu'il l'est dans son corps naturel. O accomplissement parfait du Christ entier ! quand sera-ce que nous vous verrons ?" Quesnel.
