14 à 21 Prière de l'apôtre pour ses frères.

Le c'est pourquoi de Ephésiens 3.13 indiquait une conclusion tirée de ce qui précède immédiatement, c'est-à-dire, de l'apostolat de Paul. (Ephésiens 3.8-12)

Le c'est à cause de cela de Ephésiens 3.14 reprend celui du Ephésiens 3.1 ; ayant achevé ce qu'il voulait dire de son ministère, l'apôtre revient, par la même expression conjonctive, à la grande pensée, qui, tout à l'heure déjà, remplissait son cœur : il adresse à Dieu des prières ardentes pour l'affermissement et l'avancement de ses frères dans la vie intérieure.

Les versets Ephésiens 3.16-19 expriment ce qu'il demande en leur faveur. Ces versets se rattachent donc directement à ce que Paul a dit des grâces immenses accordées aux chrétiens convertis du paganisme. (Ephésiens 2.11-22) Ils ont déjà beaucoup reçu ; c'est ce qui lui donne courage et foi pour demander davantage, jusqu'à "toute la plénitude de Dieu." (Ephésiens 3.19)

"Cette seconde prière de saint Paul pour les Ephésiens a ainsi la même motif que la première, (Ephésiens 1.15-20) dont elle n'est guère que la reprise et le développement. Telle est la gratuité des dons de Dieu et notre pauvreté propre, que nous n'avons pas d'autre titre à des grâces nouvelles que les grâces déjà reçues ; mais ce titre suffit." A. Monod.
