Ephésiens 4.16

C’est grâce à lui que le corps forme un tout solide, bien uni par toutes les articulations dont il est pourvu. Ainsi, lorsque chaque partie fonctionne comme elle doit, le corps entier grandit et se développe par l’amour.

Comparer Colossiens 2.19. Il faudrait d'abord donner une traduction littérale de ce verset, mais elle est presque impossible : "Duquel Christ, (Ephésiens 4.15) tout le corps, bien organisé ensemble et bien uni ensemble par chaque liaison de la communication, opère l'accroissement du corps, selon l'efficace et dans la mesure de chaque partie pour sa propre édification, dans la charité."

C'est ici le développement complet et pratique de l'image que Paul affectionne, (Ephésiens 2.15,16) qu'il avait déjà dans la pensée en écrivant les deux versets précédents, (Ephésiens 2.13,14) et d'après laquelle 1'Eglise est considérée comme un corps organisé, le corps de Christ. Ce qu'il tire ici de cette belle image peut se résumer dans les pensées suivantes :

1° Tout, dans ce corps, est dirigé par le Chef, (Ephésiens 4.15) Christ, comme dans le corps humain, par la tête. (Il ne faut pas oublier que, dans le vieux français, le mot chef signifie tête.)

2° Ce corps est aussi artistement coordonné et organiquement uni que le corps humain.

3° Ce qui fait le lien des divers membres, c'est leur coopération ou communication mutuelle, chacun fournissant sa part à la vie de l'ensemble, et cela selon sa force, son efficace, et dans la mesure qui lui est propre, en sorte que l'harmonie de tout le corps soit conservée. Suivant d'autres, le mot que nous traduisons par communication et qui signifie "fourniture, largesse" désignerait la largesse faite par Christ, ses dons à l'Eglise (Ephésiens 4.11) qui sont la liaison, les jointures du corps.

4° De cette manière le corps grandit (Grec : "opère l'accroissement du corps") pour sa propre édification.

5° Ce qui en est l'âme et la vie, c'est la charité, provenant de Christ comme tout le reste, et s'augmentant par le secours même que se prêtent réciproquement tous les membres.
