Ces deux premiers versets n'auraient pas dû être séparés du chapitre précédent auquel ils appartiennent. (Voy. Ephésiens 4.32 note.)

Après avoir dit là que le pardon de Dieu est pour nous la règle et la source du pardon que nous accordons à nos frères, l'apôtre insiste ici sur cette pensée, en nous exhortant à imiter Dieu dans sa miséricorde ; des enfants bien-aimés doivent ressembler à leur Père.

Puis il rappelle à notre cœur un motif tout-puissant de marcher ainsi dans la charité : c'est l'immense amour dont Christ nous a aimés, et qu'il a manifesté en donnant sa vie pour nous. (Comparer Jean 15.13 ; Romains 5.8 et suivants ; Galates 2.20)

Ce grand sacrifice, Paul l'envisage sous un double aspect, en le désignant comme une oblation et comme un sacrifice sanglant. Christ a offert l'un et l'autre : la première en offrant à Dieu le sacrifice de sa volonté, de son obéissance jusqu'à la mort, ce qui était le devoir de tous les hommes ; le second, en portant sur la croix la peine de leurs péchés. Par le premier de ces sacrifices, il nous a tracé la voie où nous devons le suivre, et nous en a rendus capables ; par le second, il nous a délivrés de la condamnation que nous avions méritée. (Comparer Romains 12.1 note ; 2Corinthiens 5.15, note.)

Si ce double sacrifice de l'amour du Sauveur a été agréable à Dieu (Grec : "en odeur de bonne senteur ;" comparez Genèse 8.21 ; Lévitique 1.9 ; 2.12-16 etc.), Dieu aura aussi pour agréables les sacrifices que nous lui offrirons en pardonnant à nos frères dans ce même esprit de charité qui était en Christ. (Matthieu 18.33 ; 1Jean 4.11 ; Matthieu 5.23 et suivants)
