Tarsis : colonie phénicienne an sud de l'Espagne, près de l'embouchure du Guadalquivir, le Tartessos des Grecs. L'usage s'était établi de désigner par l'expression vaisseaux de Tarsis, les grands navires employés aux voyages de long cours, alors même qu'ils avaient une autre destination que l'Espagne. Ainsi Salomon et Josaphat entretenaient sur la mer Rouge des flottes qui sont appelées flottes de Tarsis (1Rois 9.26 ; 10.22 ; 22.49 ; comparez Psaumes 48.8). La même chose dut avoir lieu après qu'Ozias eut reconquis Elath (voir introduction).

Ce qui charme les yeux : les articles de luxe qui arrivaient d'outre-mer. Il faut se rappeler que les Hébreux n'avaient, pour ainsi dire, ni art, ni industrie.
