Des cantiques : en réponse à l'invitation du verset 15. Les fidèles échappés au jugement célèbrent la délivrance. Mais au moment même où leurs chants retentissent, le prophète est subitement saisi par une émotion tout autre que celle de la joie.

Splendeur du juste. C'est, le contenu du cantique des fidèles : les justes vont enfin recevoir l'honneur qui leur est promis et dont l'oppression des méchants les prive depuis si longtemps. Comparez 4.2 ; 28.5.

Je suis anéanti... Malheur... ! Tout n'est pas fini, un nouveau châtiment va éclater, plus terrible que tous les précédents ; le prophète tremble d'émotion à cette vue ; qui pourra subsister devant ce jugement suprême, qui ébranlera la terre et les cieux mêmes ? Comparez une émotion analogue 21.3-4 ; 26.17-18 ; voir aussi 6.5.

Les traîtres trahissent... Comparez 33.1. C'est parce qu'il y a encore des méchants que cette dernière purification est nécessaire.

Les croyants peuvent être dispersés dans les parties les plus extrêmes du globe : dans ce cas, ils chanteront, et ne gémiront pas !

Nous pouvons constater, dans ce texte, à quel point les pécheurs sont terrifiés ; le prophète déplore les malheurs qui séviront alors sur terre, parmi le petit nombre de croyants qui restera. Il prévoit également que le péché sera sans limites. La signification de ce texte est on ne peut plus claire : le mal poursuit les pécheurs. Toutes les puissances de ce monde sont instables et éphémères. Les hommes désirent habiter ici-bas dans des demeures princières, dans de véritables châteaux ; en fait, toute habitation sera balayée, telle une cabane, construite pour une nuit : elle tombera inexorablement.

Mais il y aura plus tard, de nouveaux cieux et une nouvelle terre, en lesquels ne demeurera que la droiture. Le péché est un fardeau pour la création entière : un lourd fardeau, sous lequel elle gémit présentement, et finira par succomber.

Les grands de ce monde, ceux qui manifestent ouvertement leur « magnificence », pensent pouvoir échapper à tout danger, mais Dieu les visitera, dans leur orgueil et leur cruauté. Ne jugeons rien avant le temps imparti par le Seigneur, malgré les épreuves que certains peuvent traverser. Personne en ce monde ne devrait se considérer comme définitivement en sécurité, malgré le fait que quelques-uns puissent connaître la prospérité ; ni d'ailleurs céder au désespoir, malgré des apparences qui peuvent paraître déplorables. En toutes choses, Dieu doit être glorifié. Le mystère de la Providence n'est pas encore dévoilé !

La ruine des ennemis du Rédempteur doit préparer l'avènement du Royaume de ce Dernier, et alors la Lumière de Droiture apparaîtra entièrement, à Sa gloire.

Heureux celui qui remarque les avertissements envoyés à ceux qui l'entourent ; chaque pécheur impénitent « sombrera » dans sa transgression ; il ne pourra plus jamais échapper à cette situation, pendant que les croyants, de leur côté, apprécieront la félicité éternelle !
