World English Bible Then you will say in your heart, 'Who has conceived these for me, since I have been bereaved of my children, and am solitary, an exile, and wandering back and forth? Who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where were they?'"

Sion avait perdu (par l'exil) tous ses fils ; n'ayant as eu d'enfants pendant son veuvage, elle ne peut comprendre d'où lui vient cette multitude de fils. Ces fils ne sont pas des israélites seulement. Comment seraient-ils si nombreux que la Palestine fût trop étroite pour les recevoir ? Ce sont aussi les païens convertis, qui, selon l'intuition constante de l'Ancien Testament, sont envisagés comme incorporés à la nation juive. On comprend que Sion ignore elle-même comment ils lui ont été enfantés. Ils l'ont été sans sa participation, pendant qu'elle était séparée de son Dieu (son mari) par le rejet du Messie. Comparez 66.7-8 une image dont le sens a quelque analogie avec celui de notre passage (Sion enfantant sans avoir été en travail).
