Après avoir parlé du serviteur, Dieu s'adresse à lui (en te voyant) ; ainsi déjà 42.6. C'est comme si, sortant d'un vague lointain, le serviteur se rapprochait et apparaissait toujours plus distinctement.

Beaucoup ont été interdits : c'est-à-dire frappés d'étonnement et comme pétrifiés à sa vue. La fin du verset est une parenthèse qui explique la raison de cet étonnement : le serviteur ne parviendra à la gloire qu'à travers des souffrances telles qu'il en sera tout défiguré ; comparez 50.6-7 ; 53.3-7. Dans cette parenthèse explicative, il est parlé de nouveau du serviteur à la troisième personne, et le verset 15, qui reprend la phrase interrompue, continue de même.
