Cette description de l'idolâtrie (versets 5 à 6) ne convient pas au temps de l'exil. Chaque trait nous transporte en Palestine et sous le règne de quelque prince impie, comme Achaz ou Manassé.

Les terébinthes étaient probablement les arbres sacrés d'Astarté.

Tout arbre verdoyant. Locution très usitée pour désigner les bosquets des idoles. Comparez 1.29.

Le terme : qui vous échauffez..., est emprunté à l'image de l'adultère sous laquelle l'idolâtrie est décrite ici. Peut-être fait-il aussi allusion aux cérémonies impures qui accompagnaient réellement le culte des idoles.

L'immolation des enfants fut pratiquée par les israélites avant l'exil en l'honneur de Moloch, dansla vallée de Hinnom, et de Baal, sur les hauts-lieux. Voyez par exemple 2Rois 23.10 ; Jérémie 7.31 ; 19.5 ; Ezéchiel 16.20 et suivants, etc. Ce culte horrible, auquel se rattachaient sans doute certaines cérémonies mystérieuses, se célébrait dans des endroits écartés et sauvages (ravins, grottes).
