On était initié à ces cultes mystérieux, tenus pour particulièrement saints, par des cérémonies de purification ; c'est à ces rites que notre passage fait allusion. Les initiés, qui croient être après cela en possession d'une sainteté supérieure, invitent les profanes (les fidèles adorateurs de Jéhova) à respecter en eux ce caractère sacro-saint et à ne pas les souiller par leur contact, de peur d'éveiller le déplaisir des dieux nouveaux.

La fin du verset indique le sort réservé à ces idolâtres : ils seront les objets de la colère de Dieu. Esaïe décrit cette colère comme un feu inextinguible qui se manifeste par une fumée sortant de ses narines ; les narines sont envisagées comme le siège de la colère, selon une image très fréquente. Comparez 30.27 ; Deutéronome 32.22.
